FAC 02-27-96 City of Cupertino FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting February 27,1996 1. CALL TO ORDER: At 7:49 p.m. Vice Chairperson Sievert called the meeting to order in Conference Room A and led the Pledge of Allegiance. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 3. ROLL CALL Commissioners present: Steve Beard; Robert Lerner (8:16 p.m.);Sheila Mohan; Mary Sievert, Andrew Springmeyer; Rita Young. Commissioners absent: Ikeda. Staff members present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith; Recording Secretary Dorothy Steenfott. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. Minutes of the regular meeting of January 23,1996. Beard moved to approve the minutes as amended. Motion carried unanimously with Ikeda absent. (Minutes amended on page 3, item 8C to read "When that form is returned, a follow-up letter from the City Manager will be sent to Mr. Zhao.") 5. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS City Clerk Kimberly Smith reported that a handwritten letter of thanks from Creativity Unlimited was received as well as the typewritten one included in the agenda package. Clerk also reported on a letter that was received from the Shakespeare Festival regarding the school programs of Julius Caesar and Macbeth. Beard reported on a letter he received from the Arts Council of Santa Clara County offering the opportunity for upcoming Arts and Business Awards dinner for $50 each. The event will be held on March 7 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. Sievert moved that money be available for any and all commissioners choosing to attend. STAFF REPORTS City Clerk handed out the January budget report which was not available at the time the agenda packet was prepared. 7. NEW BUSINESS A. Lucille Honig, member of the Cupertino Toyokawa Sister Cities and Coordinator of the Cherry Blossom Festival discussed her desire to display children's art at next year's festival. She suggested that they would like to get the schools involved and have a competition with the theme of "What Spring Means to Me". Springmeyer stated that he would be willing to see if there is any interest in the school districts, both for this year and next year. An ad hoc committee of Springmeyer and Young was formed. Sievert moved to place a spending cap of$300 for expenses incurred for the art display and promotional materials at this year's function. Springmeyer seconded. Motion carried unanimously with Ikeda absent. B. Grant applications. City Clerk said that $5,909.50 remained in the grants budget and that the commission had said they may award additional funds to the Euphrat Museum. An ad hoc committee of Spring meyer, Sievert and Mohan was formed and will report back at the March meeting. 8. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on Sing-a-Long event. Mohan reported on a Sing-a-Iong event. She stated that Quinlan is not available, but the Senior Center is available on May 4 from I :00-4:00 p.m. She reported that the event will be advertised in the Cupertino Scene to solicit interest in the event and prepare the announcement for the Scene. The ad hoc committee of Mohan, Sievert and Young will continue to work on this event. There may be a small expense to provide refreshments. February 27, 1996 Fine Arts Commission Page 3 B. Update on San Jose State University Project. Sievert reported on the graduate student project which is focusing on the Heart of the City. The students had done a walk-through and had been given full access to the City's Planning Department. Sievert will invite the students, Planning Commissioner David Doyle and Instructor Diane Salazar to the next meeting so they can get the commission's input on the design ofthe project and some suggestions regarding public art. C. Update on Art ofthe City Young reported that the survey will go out in the Chamber newsletter in March, which will also include a photograph and follow-up article. Sievert suggested that Young contact Sandra Beard as she may be a good resource on the art of the city project since her grant application described a similar approach. 9. NEWS ARTICLES City Clerk reported on the news articles regarding a potential candidate for the Distinguished Artist of the Year. 10. ADJOURNMENT At 10:10 p.m., the meeting was adjourned.
