Economic Development Team Meeting
November 6, 1996 Summary
Present at the meeting were: John Statton, Steve Dowling, Bert Viskovich, Lauralee Sorensen,
Dorothy Steenfott, Tom Hall, John Bautista, Bob Cowan, Don Brown, and Doug Huston.
Steve Dowling discussed developing a theme for the brochure. He suggested a contest be held at
the library or that we let the graphic designers suggest possible themes. Steve will pursue these
ideas and report back to the committee.
Don Brown updated the group on the cost of adding anchor stores to the ValIco sign. Bert stated
that it is a scenic highway and we would not be able to have an electronic board. Don felt the
electronic board was too expensive given the current situation of the mall. Carol will approach
Sears and Penneys to see if they would contribute approximately $10,000 each for an anchor
sign. Bert stated that the City can remove some of the trees at a minimum cost.
The group discussed the possibility of inviting a representative from DeAnza or UC Santa Cruz
to join the committee. It was decided that we should invite each of them to attend a meeting and
give the committee an update on what they are doing in the area of economic development and
then decide whether we want to add additional members.
Lauralee suggested that Cupertino have a farmers market. She felt that it really brings the
community together despite the fact that it is not a money maker for the City. John Statton will
check with merchants to see if there's any interest and if they'd be willing to help finance the
event.
Bert Viskovich reported that the attorneys for Davidson Chevrolet are not interested in paying for
any of the cost for the bike lanes. He stated that if the City does pay for the improvements, it
would be a precedent setting case as the City has not done this in the past. It was decided that we
should hold off on going to Council. Lauralee Sorensen and John Bautista will set up a meeting
with Mr. Weiss to explain the importance of these improvements.
Don Brown updated the group on the English/Chinese sign issue. He stated that the City has no
power to regulate language on signs. A meeting with managers of shopping centers will be held
where this issue can be discussed.
John Bautista reported that the grievance list for The Oaks is growing. The latest item added to
the list is that the lawns have not been mowed in weeks.
John Bautista discussed the Stevens Creek/DeAnza corner. He stated that he felt there is an
opportunity available to the committee to find other ways to develop the site. Don Brown, John
Bautista, and Tom Hall will meet with Deek Hunter to explore other opportunities for
development of the site. John Statton will report to the current applicant that other possibilities
for site development are being explored.
