Economic Development Team Meeting
October 2,1996 Summary
Present at the meeting were: John Bautista, John Statton, Steve Dowling, Bob Cowan, Bert
Viskovich, Lauralee Sorensen, Dorothy Steenfott, Donna Lawler, Tom Hall, and Carol Atwood.
John Bautista gave an update of the Chicago trip (see packet from 10/2/96). He reported that the
meeting was very productive.
Carol discussed the drawing of the proposed Valko sign. She will obtain quotes for a sign with
and without an electronic board. She will also approach Penneys and Sears to see if they will
contribute to the cost.
Bert gave an update on the bike lane situation at Davidson Chevrolet. A compromise proposal
will decrease the median and restripe for ongoing traffic and the left turn lane. He is waiting for
cost confirmation from Davidson's attorney.
The group discussed ideas for slogans that can be used for the brochure cover. If anyone has
ideas, please let Dorothy know.
John Statton asked whether Planning could identify standard paint pallets so that painting
permits could be streamlined and over the counter. Bob Cowan will follow-up.
Economic Develooment Uodates
1. ValIco Sign
Prièe quotes for a sign with and without an electronic board should be received within the
next week.
2. DeAnza Project
The business survey phase of the FoothiIl-DeAnza Economic Development Project has been
completed. A press release was held on October 7 and we have received information on the
firms who were contacted. A summary of some ofthe survey results follows:

Businesses chose to locàte in Cupertino for: I) good business climate, 2) proximity
to customers, and 3) site availability. Measurex, Any Mountain, and Service
Merchandise were among the businesses who chose Cupertino for its good business
climate.

REI and Siemens Components chose Cupertino for its proximity to customers, and
CKS Group and Measurex chose Cupertino for site availability.
Over one half of the businesses in Cupertino expect moderate degrees of growth.
Twelve percent expect to greatly expand their operations through 1996 and beyond.

More than 47% of Cupertino firms plan to stay at the same site, but increase in size.
CKS Group, Computer Solutions, Measurex, and Service Merchandise were among
those planning to stay at their same location in Cupertino.

The Garlic Shoppe is leaving due to declining sales since Emporium closed.
REI wants to purchase a site rather than rent, and they would like to stay in Santa
Clara County.

Commodities sales occupations (computer sales representative; department store sales
associate), computer related occupations (progranuner; technical support staff),
architecture, engineering and surveying (mechanical and design engineers) are the
major occupations expected to see growth over the next 12 months in Cupertino.
Obstacles for Cupertino businesses are City pequitting processes, land use/zoning
issues, local code/regulations, parking, and public safety.
