Economic: Development Team Meeting
August 21, 1996 Summary
Present at the meeting were: John Statton, Tom Hall, Donna Lawler, John Bautista, Bob Cowan,
Steve Dowling, Bert Viskovich, Don Brown, Carol Atwood and Linda Lagergren.
Steve Dowling gave an update on the brochure and asked the group for feedback. on the
following issues (answers denoted in italics):
Who is the target audience? Business retention and attraction.
Who will use the brochure? Econ Development. Parks and Rec. Chamber and Sponsors
How will it be used? To promote Cupertino and it's facilities
Should it have a theme? Yes (one suggestion "State of the Art Community")
Quantity to produce? Large supply of folders with inserts kept to a minimum (for updates).
Check with printer re: price break Possibly order 5.000.
Cost? Budget is $15,000. Approach sponsors - especially real estate community and banks.
Steve and Linda will pursue a 2 or 3 page generic folder with multiple color/picture
combinations. Inserts will be standardized but produced in house and tailored to the use of the
brochure.
The City Council has asked the committee and Planning Commissioner Orrin Mahoney and
Housing Committee Chair Kathy Robinson to review and recommend possible amendments to
the Housing Mitigation Plan. Bob Cowan explained the issues at hand and it was decided to
devote the entire meeting of September 18 to this project. Bob's department will provide a staff
report and survey information on other city fees prior to this meeting. Please plan on a one and
one-half hour meeting on this day.
Carol Atwood reviewed the proposed articles to be written this next year as part of our education
focus. The Economic Development Team will be listed as the author of the articles. The
subcommittee will follow up with Michael Cronk for SJ Mercury coverage and send all articles
through the committee for review.
John Statton suggested the it would be beneficial for the group to discuss ordinances that will
impact economic development (eg sign ordinance). A-frame signs were also discussed as
increasing in the City. It was decided that a supportive article in the Chamber newsletter
explaining the proper use of A-frame signs may be beneficial in curtailing the problems.
Web site "homework" is due today. Thanks to everyone that contributed.
Joint Venture Silicon Valley has approached all cities asking them to respond to a developer
request for sites for a Marriott Suites product (lower end of a Marriott Residence Inn). Bob
Cowan and Carol Atwood explained the proposal and expressed concerns given the current
recruitment efforts of a Residence Inn and attraction of this product itself. Bob will contact the
developer and follow up on the concerns of the committee.
John Statton expressed his thanks to everyone that helped make the Country Festival a success.
Profits were higher than anticipated. Congratulations!
Next meeting is Wednesday, September 4 at 7:30am.
