To: Council Members of City of Cupertino From: Taipei (Neihu) Friendship City Committee Subject: Smart City Conference & Expo Initiative Date: September 18, 2016 Cupertino has four active sister cities and is working to establish 6 friendship cities. Taipei (Neihu) is one of the candidates. These friendship cities were considered to be approved by City Council to promote a friendly exchange in the areas of economics, culture, education, innovation, and entrepreneurship between Cupertino and each city. Given the increasing interest in establishing more friendly relationships with communities abroad, and based on the 9/6/2016 Cupertino City Council Meeting Staff Report, there are two issues that has to be addressed: • Sustainability Impact (time) • Fiscal Impact (Money) To solve these two issues and enhance friendship city collaboration, Taipei Friendship Committee strongly recommend to have Cupertino/sister/friendship cities to host annual "smart city conference and expo", thus the business people/city development participants can exchange ideas/solutions for city level government affairs, networking, professional development, and economic growth. and further move forward in leading smart city development guidelines to the world 50% of the world’s population is living in urban areas. This is expected to accelerate to 60% by 2025, globally, with the Western, developed world reaching an 80% urbanization level. By 2050, more than 6 billion people will live in urban areas. With the rapid rise in the proportion of people living in urban areas, there is an increasing requirements, such as housing, education, transportation, water resources, energy, waste management, etc. for sustainable cities A smart city is a place where the traditional networks and services are made more efficient with the use of digital and telecommunication technologies, for the benefit of its residents and businesses, making all cities a better and healthier place to live, where business can prosper, citizen are happy, and there is a sustainable economy. Cupertino, as a leading technology community, along with its friendship/sister cities, should not only promote cultural/educational/humanitarian awareness, but also initiate smart city development by fully utilizing the talents pool in Silicon Valley.
