One tree is a coast redwood(Sequoia sempervirens)tree and the other tree is a native plum(Prunus americana) tree. The evaluation was done from the ground and tne trees were not climbed. Two photographs(Photo 1 and 2) are provided as visual aids in the discussion of the trees. Miller Avenue is oriented north-south for the purposes of tnis letter. ?he coast redwood tree(Photo 1)is located in what I would consider the front lawn of the property. The trunk measures 35.7 inches in diameter at a height of four and one half feet above ground line. There is live foliage throughout the canopy of the tree but this foliage is just a srnall fraction of the foliage necessary to keep the tree alive. 7he base of the tree is asymmetrical and under developed on the west side of the tree. Irrigation of the lawn has been sporadic. The soil is compact and dry. I do not believe there are adequafie methods available to improve the health of the tree. The tree is in decline and I recommend removing the tree. The native plum tree(Photo 2)is located in the lawn area east and slightly south of the coast redwood tree. The trunk measures 19 inches in diameter at a height of four and one half feet above ground line. Surface roots show decay. I believe the tree has died from a cornbination of old age, mechanical damage to the roots, and a lack of water. I recommend removing the tree.
