Good evening Madame Mayor and City Council. At the national level, we recently
witnessed a demoralizing, polarizing campaign that continues to divide this nation.
Many in our country are disillusioned by the lack of experience of proposed cabinet
members. The nominees, while perhaps book smart or leaders in their own
industries, have so little experience and understanding of how government operates.
Many of these nominees have not served our nation's citizens in the best interest
of our communities but have had their companies interest at heart throughout their
adult careers.
So what does this have to do with the city of Cupertino?
Next week, you, the city council, similar to our US Senate, will interview residents
applying for various city commission appointments. You will need to weigh who has
the background, experience and wherewithal to do right for our city.
While I have not been privy to the list, I suspect the candidates for the Planning
Commission all have the basic requisite experience: live in the city and ability to
attend the meetings.
What I believe we need in a future planning commissioner, though, goes beyond the
basics. We have also come through a very polarizing campaign season through
Measures C and D. It was clearly evident a majority of our voting residents were
not satisfied with keeping Vallco as is, nor did they completely buy into the Hills
concept. And while Vallco is a major piece of property in our city, undoubtedly
there will be a variety of other proposed changes.
Our next planning commissioner must have the ability to not only read and
understand the General Plan and city codes, they will need to keep the city's long-
term interest in mind. The next planning commissioner should have experience in
city budgetary matters, seeing projects take shape from conception to build out,
have a track record of making hard decisions, and have a thick enough skin to take
the heat.

It almost goes without saying (but I am going to say it), the future commissioner
should have a backbone, be solid in their views and principles and not pander to
various groups. Candidates who lack the ability to stand up for what's right, and
applicable under city codes, will not best serve Cupertino. It is one thing to say
you can make tough decisions and stick by them, it is entirely different to do so.
Remember -the best predictor of future behavior is past performance.
I have the experience of having weighed this same decision, and made appointments
to the Planning Commission. I urge you to please choose wisely.
Thank you for your service and continue to have a good evening.
