RE: TREES — PRECONSTRUCTION MEETING
Crossroads Shopping Center, 20730 Stevens Creek Boulevard, Cupertin CIZ,
FEB 0 3 2
Dear Mr. Schroeder:
This letter presents my observations and comments regarding my recent review of the
project plans emailed to me on 1/8/12, and a 1/19/12 site visit.
1. Tree fencing for the very large oak #37 on building pad F was being installed at the
time of my site visit. Its configuration is correct, and appears adequate for protection
(although panels versus driven posts are being used).
2. For street tree #155, orange -plastic fencing was wrapped around its lower trunk in lieu
of chain link fencing mounted on driven posts (per Sheet L3.2). Given the small tree's
location (in a planter between the street curb and sidewalk), I see no significant issues,
provided the ground area beneath the tree's canopy is protected in accordance with my
report recommendations.
3. Recommendations contained within items a thru e, recommendation #18, of my
report have not yet been implemented (these pertain to oak tree #37). I recommend
these occur in the near future, and before final inspection.
4. The plans identify a proposal to remove ash trees #132 and 133. If they are retained
and expected to remain viable and stable, recommendations from my report should be
followed. I am available to further discuss how protection can be accomplished.

5. For recently installed trees at the 20730 SCB site, the contractor and I spoke about the
bubbler locations needing correction for proper watering. I also suggested a watering
berm (circular using existing mulch) be established around the edge of the new trees'
rootballs, and mulch not be piled on the trunks. Please forward the planting detail for
review (for the 20730 SCB site, as well as for pads E and F).
6. As requested, I reviewed the tree species proposed for installation, and find that they
are okay for the small planter areas.
7. Tree #11, Chinese elm, located at 20730 SCB, sustained some minor trunk damage
seemingly by the operation of a small tractor scraping the trunk. Great care must be
taken to avoid this occurrence to other trees, and where there is a risk, orange -plastic
fencing (one- to two-inch layer) should be wrapped around the exposed area.
8. At your request, I will revisit the site to review fencing to be installed at pad E, as well
as to evaluate retained and installed trees once construction for 20730 SCB is
complete.
Sincerely,
hM6-ky4 .
