Total Budget $130,800 (2016-2017 fiscal year) Board Members 12 Staff members 0 Volunteers More than 70 Organizational Mission Statement The mission of Friends of Deer Hollow Farm is to: • Preserve Deer Hollow Farm as an educational center and working farm. • Support the Farm's environmental education programs for the benefit of schools and the community by raising funds through donations, grants and public events. Friends of Deer Hollow Farm 2017 - 2018 Grant Request 1 Brief Description of the Organization Deer Hollow Farm is a 160 year-old historic ranch located in to Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve, immediately west of Cupertino. Its mission is to provide environmental education and historical programs for our community. Friends of Deer Hollow Farm is an all-volunteer,non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has supported Deer Hollow Farm and its outstanding educational program since 1994. Brief Description of Services Provided Deer Hollow Farm is an educational center where the public, school classes, and community groups can observe and participate in a historic working farm.No entrance fee, parking fee or admission fee is charged. The Farm houses many live farm animals.Without these animals, the Farm would not be a living history center, but rather a museum of old farm buildings. These Farm animals and the Farm's environmental education program teach children and the community about: • The value of protected land and wildlife • The source of their food • The process of turning fleece into cloth • Principles of recycling and avoiding waste • The interdependence of all life • The culture and history of the Bay Area's Native American Ohlone people. Environmental Education Classes Since 1976, the Farm has offered an environmental education program to elementary school students throughout Santa Clara County and the Peninsula. These outdoor, hands-on classes are so popular that a lottery is held annually to fill the 5,000 available spaces. The Deer Hollow Farm classes reinforce the California State elementary school curriculum in history, science, and social studies through exciting and innovative outdoor activities. The classes are taught by trained volunteers in small groups that allow time for individual interaction and questions. The lessons the children are receiving at their schools come alive for them at the Farm and in the replica Ohlone Village. FODHF funds a scholarship program for children from low-income schools, as identified by the federal free-lunch guidelines. Our scholarships pay all costs associated with tuition and transportation. This year, 40% of our field trip students will attend for free. Purpose of Requested Funds: Garage Interior Remodel Total Program Budget $12,550 Friends of Deer Hollow Farm 2017 -2018 Grant Request 2 Requested Amount $12,550 Percent of total budget 100% Type of Request One-Time Request The large garage at Deer Hollow Farm is the main indoor work area for all maintenance projects, the storage of tools and equipment, etc. This project is to purchase and install new storage, lighting, and work benches in the garage to help organize tools and work spaces and to eliminate rodent habitat. The storage in the garage is currently a mix of well-used high-school lockers, wood-working projects, and re-purposed office cabinets. It is difficult to organize tools and materials when the storage containers themselves are cluttered and do not fit the space efficiently. There is also a gap behind all of the current storage containers which has encouraged rats to nest. The project includes finishing the interior walls with plywood to eliminate rodent habitat. Storage Containers at Ohlone Village Total Program Budget $2,450 Requested Amount $2,450 Percent of total budget 100% Type of Request One-Time Request The Ohlone Village at the Farm is the main teaching sites for elementary school classes and is in use continually during the school year. The existing wooden storage boxes used in the Ohlone Village to protect the Ohlone teaching materials are beginning to weather and warp. The replica artifacts are now at risk to damage from moisture and nesting rodents. This project is to replace the storage boxes with nine metal `job site'containers. The boxes are rodent-proof and weather- and rust-resistant; they also have a built-in locking system. They each measure 45 inches in length. TOTAL BOTH PROJECTS: $15,000 Friends of Deer Hollow Farm 2017 -2018 Grant Request 3 City Priority Funding: this section to be completed by the city. Impact on the Cupertino Community Based on four quarterly surveys of Farm visitors by zip code in 2013-14, Bay Area citizens visit the Farm more than 100,000 times each year, and there are about.11,800 visits to the Farm by Cupertino residents each year. Elementary schools located in Cupertino are sending 610 students on 23 Deer Hollow Farm field trip classes for the 2016-2017 school year. These students come from these elementary schools: Collins, Eaton, Garden Gate, Lincoln, St. Joseph of Cupertino, and Stevens Creek. Schools located in Cupertino Union School District, but not physically located in Cupertino, are sending an additional 348 students in 14 classes;these schools are Christa McAuliffe, De Vargas, Dilworth, and Nimitz. Staff Competency Our staff skills include business leaders, community leaders, educators, and farm volunteers.
