The scope of our work included: It. 1. A reconnaissance of the site. 2. A field investigation, including drilling and sampling of the subsurface soils. 3. Laboratory testing of selected soil samples. 4. Engineering analysis of data and formulation of recommendations for the proposed house pad. S. Preparation of a written report. Location and Description of the Site The subject property is located on the north end of Adriana Avenue in Cupertino, California (see Site Plan, Figure 1). The proposed building pad, situated some 125 feet from the end of the cul-de-sac of Adriana Avenue, is essentially level and slopes gently downward in a northerly direction. The site was vacant at the time of our 1 APpHod Soil MOMMS File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 I f I 1 I I 1 1 r / Scale: 1 = 33:L 1 1 1 d C u 'u rt C 1 d a 0 ,r Drainage Ditch--, th `, _' -- --•I' --gyp _a f ki s u1 v rt € LEGEND + test borings 1 f SITE tv c Q STEVENS CREEK BLVD, rp Q c d d ro C ro A O INDEX MAP no Sr "a Figure 1 - Site Plan and Test Boring Locations, Adriana Alria limemags Cupertino, California 2 File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 investigation on December 17, 1976. There were tree stump remains in the area of the proposed building pad, with fruit trees to the rear of the site. There is an existing drainage swale along the south property line. Light weed growth was noted throughout the site. The general locations and descriptions referred to in this report are based on a visual inspection of the site by a representative of our office and a drawing by Panko-Sinclair Associates dated November 4, 1976. Field Investigation The drilling investigation was carried out December 17, 1976 and included the drilling of three exploratory borings at the approxi- mate locations shown on the Site Plan, Figure 1. The borings were drilled to a maximum depth of 20 feet below the existing ground surface. The borings were advanced by using a truck -mounted, power -driven drill rig with a six-inch diameter, continuous -flight type auger. The materials encountered were logged continuously in the fieldduring the drilling operations. Where possible, relatively undisturbed soil samples were obtained by driving a three-inch O.D. split -tube sampler by means of the "standard penetration" sampling method. This method consisted of driving the sampler into the ground using a 140-1b. hammer, falling freely through a vertical height of 30 inches. 3 Upped &i1Meoa File No. A6 -0797 -JI January 31, 1977 No groundwater was observed at any of the three test boring loca- tions within the depths drilled. Figures 2 through 4, Appendix A, Logs of Test Borings, show a graphic presentation of the soil encountered and the vertical locations of the undisturbed core samples obtained. Laboratory Testing In the laboratory, the in-place conditions of moisture content and 3 dry density of the core samples obtained during drilling were deter- mined by weighing a known volume of material, before and after oven drying. Classification and plasticity of the near -surface soils were determined by means of Atterberg Limits tests. Direct shear tests were performed on select, near -surface, undisturbed samples to assist in determining strength parameters for the native soil. The results of.all laboratory tests performed are summarized in Tables I and II, Appendix A. 4 APuNd Soil MOMaOS File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 Soil Conditions The soil types and conditions vary only slightly over the subject site. The native soils were found to be typical valley alluvium, with essentially horizontal bedding plans. In general, the soil profile consists of a 3.5 to 4.5 foot surface layer'of dense, light brown, fine, silty sand and gravel. Below this layer is a medium brown silty sand with some gravel, which is 3.5 to 5.0 feet thick. The soil underlying these two upper layers consists primarily of a light brown, silty sand and gravel with gravel percentages in- creasing with depth. All of the native soil deposits investigated on the site appear to be low in expansive potential, with good vertical drainage, and of sufficient density to safely support the proposed residence without detrimental settlement, once recommended site grading has been acceptably completed. No groundwater was encountered in any of the three test borings to the depths penetrated at the time of drilling on December 17, 1976. 5 APPROd SoilnMeihaPIc$ File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 DISCUSSIONS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECMIENDATIONS Suitability of the Site 1. The proposed residential building pad area covered by this inves- tigation is considered suitable for the proposed one story, single family home, provided the recommendations set forth in this report a are incorporated into the design considerations and the project plans and specifications. The proposed location of the house on the sub- ject site is as shown on the enclosed Site Plan, Figure 1. It is our understanding that the house will be essentially fitted onto the natural ground surface, requiring only minor lot grading. The wood frame house is planned with.raised wood floors, except for the con- crete slab -on -grade garage floor. No basements are contemplated. 2. The native soils may be used for the creation of compacted structural fill or backfill after removal of all native soils con- taining debris or organics. In no case should organically contami- nated soil strippings be used as structural fill under the building or driveway areas. Grading 3. The placement of fill and control of any grading operations at the site should be done in accordance with the Recommended Grading Speci- fications included in Appendix B of this report. Any imported struc- tural fill must be approved by the Soil Engineer before being brought to the site. 6 ARM soil Mech File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 4. The surface soils over the entire site to an average depth of 12 inches have been disturbed by cultivation and tree removal, por- tions of which are contaminated with organic matter resulting from surface weed growth. On the average, the top 1 to 3 inches of organic material should be stripped and stockpiled for later use in landscaping. The exact depth of organic surface soil stripping re- quired shall be determined by the Soil Engineer at the time of grading operations and shall be based on the conditions existing at that time. 3 5. All organic surface soil, debris, abandoned utility lines, buried tanks and large roots should be removed from the area to be developed. 6. Following the clearing and stripping operations, the then -exposed surface should be scarified to a depth of 8 inches, moisture condi- tioned as necessary and compacted to the minimum relative compaction of 90%. At this point the area will be in condition to receive foundations or compacted fill. All structural, native and imported soils must be compacted to at least 90% relative compaction. 7. Native soils, free of organics and other deleterious material, -may be used as structural fill. In no case shall stripped, organic material be used as compacted fill on the building pad or under any pavement section. All proposed import structural fill shall be non - expansive, be free of organics and other deleterious material, have no rock pieces larger than 4 inches in diameter, and have sufficient clay binder to provide stabile foundations and utility trench excavations. 7 40ho soil MEN& File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1.977 8. The Soil Engineer should be notified at least 48 hours prior to commencement of any grading operations so that he may coordinate the work in the field with the contractors. 9. Should there be any known existing utilities or underground irrigation lines on the subject site, they should be located on the grading plans to assist the field engineer in providing for their proper removal during grading operations. Foundation Recommendations I 10. The proposed one story house may be supported by a variety of foundation systems, including continuous perimeter strip and iso- lated spread footings. Design criteria for other types of founda- tions are not presented herein, since continuous strip and isolated spread foundations are expected to be the most economical for the soil conditions existing on the site. 11. Continuous perimeter strip footings should be reinforced with at least two No. 4 horizontal steel bars, with one placed near the top and one near the bottom of the foundation cross section. The actual design of the foundation, including detailed reinforcing _requirements, shall be determined by the structural engineer per- forming the structural analysis of the building and designing the supporting foundations. The foundations, interior and exterior, should be founded a minimum of 12 inches (trenching depth) below the lowest adjacent compacted soil pad grade. If the pad is not 8 Flied Soil Mee' File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 compacted as outlined in -Paragraphs 3 through 8, then a minimum of 18 inches (trenching depth) should be used. For the above condition, in either firm undisturbed native soil, properly compacted approved import fill, compacted native soil fill, or combinations thereof, the foundation may be designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 3000 psf for dead plus live loads. This value may be increased by one-third to include short term seismic and wind effects. Concrete Floor Slab -on -Grade Construction It. 12. Living Areas: For interior concrete floor slabs -on -grade in living areas, 4 inches of clean gravel or clean crushed rock material should be used between the finished soil subgrade and slabs to serve as a capillary break and a cushion layer. A moistureproof membrane may be placed within this granular.layer in order to reduce potential moisture condensation under floor coverings placed on top of the concrete floors. Two inches of clean sand on top of the membrane will serve to protect the membrane during construction and will also assist in stabilizing the concrete curing process. If sand is to be used on top of the membrane, the unerlying gravel or.crushed rock layer may be decreased to 2 inches. In no case should the com- bined thickness of gravel and sand cover just described be less than 4 inches. It is suggested that all interior concrete floor slabs -on - grade in living areas contain at least wire mesh reinforcing and be structurally tied to the foundations. 9 WHO SoilMOMBIS File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 13. Garage Floor: Due to the low expansive, granular nature of native soils, the use of wire mesh within the.garage floor slabs and baserock under the slabs are.considered optional. The garage slab should be divided, ideally, into four to six essentially equal sections during construction to assist in controlling shrinkage cracking. 14. Driveway: It is our opinion that the use of wire mesh rein- forcing and the placement of baserock under the driveway concrete slab -on -grade will not be necessary a, The driveway may, at the builder's option, be placed directly upon a firm, moistened, in- situ native soil subgrade. The driveway slab should be divided into several nearly equi-dimensional segments by means of deep _..scoring, redwood dividers, or divider strips cast into the concrete, to assist in controlling unsightly shrinkage or.curing cracking. General Construction Comments 15. The use of continuous roof gutters is optional. However, when roof gutters are used, splash blocks must be provided at the down- spouts to carry the collected rain water away from the house. 10 Who soft llyhch ®i t APPENDIX A i Summary of Laboratory Test Results Logs of Test Borings File No. A6 -0797-J1 January 31, 1977 TABLE I Summary of Laboratory Moisture, Density, Swell and Direct Shear Testing Sample Depth In -Place Conditions Swell Index Direct Shear Testin TABLE II Summary of Laboratory Atterberg Limits Test Results Atterberg Limits Sample Depth Description of Soil Liquid Plasticity Limit Index No. ft. % (P.
