Good afternoon, Councilmember Vaidhyanathan.
I hope this email finds you well. I regret that I am unable to attend this evening’s Council meeting. It would’ve been
great to hear the consultant’s presentation regarding the Vallco Specific Plan. As such, I wanted to convey our
excitement that the City has elected to move forward with a Vallco specific plan and wanted to reiterate the
importance of
Moving forward with the Vallco Specific Plan without delay;
Simultaneously engaging the broader community to ensure balanced feedback on the Plan; and
Directing the consultants to study the maximum allowable number of housing units as part of the
environmental analysis (a study does not automatically represent the total number of units built on
the site).
An article published recently that more than half of your constituents are concerned about the high cost of housing.
And rightly so with Cupertino being the most expensive housing market in all of the Bay Area with a median 2-
bedroom rent of $5,000 per month. These astronomical housing costs are directly related to two issues plaguing the
City and it’s neighbors - historic housing underproduction coupled with sustained and prolonged job growth.
As you know, last week, the City of Mountain View took historic action to address it’s own jobs and housing
imbalance. Cupertino also has an imbalance between jobs and housing - with close to 2 jobs per available home (a
“healthy” balance would be 1.4 jobs per home). Fortunately, the Vallco site provides a unique opportunity for
Cupertino to act on addressing its own jobs and housing imbalance.
As a policy and advocacy organization, SV@Home can be a resource to the City in this effort. Please feel free to
call or email with any questions or concerns. You can reach me directly at (408) 215-8925.
Thank you for all that you do.
Sincerely,
Pilar Lorenzana
