Description of Suntrek Soba System Panels and Installation Suntrek contact: Randy Murch -- 408-422 3785 Suntrek is the manufacture of this system: 15 year warranty on all Suntrek manli3ctured material. Incorporated in 1991. Kim system requires 3, 48 foot by 28 inch panels equaling 288 square feet Material - EPDM Elastomer, 24" wide 72 chann=els for water flow Manifolds- Polypropylene, 2" diameter, 28" long, '1-2 channels. These manifolds are connected together using high density sleeve using a stainless, steel clamp. Water -channel - m =. 190, OD .333 Weight - l lb per sq, it empty, I '/z lbs. full Max 2peratigg temp. - 1400 Max operating pressure -- 40 psi Manifold are connected to com aasition roof using 3 "lag bolts into sheathing of roof (3/4 or 5.8) sealed with roofer's mastic (Henry's) not liquid nail (see diagram page 3) Manifolds are held in place using an EPDM collector straps (see page3) Collectors (panels) or adhered to the composistion roof approximately every 4 ft. by using; a California approved roofing sealant (see page 12 & 13 for specificatiuns). There is no air gap between roof and collectors Black schedule 40 PVC is used on all plumbing on roof and white schedule 40 FVC down side of house to pool equipment. Electricity for the automatic control units is taken from a tab on the existing pool equipment timer. No new lines run. Check valves are installed on both the feed and return pipes. ( See brochure diagram) Vacuum relief valve is installed on the high point of system on roof. This allows for 100% draining of entire system every time the system shuts down. Their is never stagnant water on roof system Composition Roofs Of all the possible solar applications, the composition roof is probably the easiest of all for installing ,113unirek collectors. The rubber mat glues well to the roofing surface and strapping penetrations are easy and trouble free when done properly. (Click on the mages for larger views) ` "e ri.. ..gip'. A ®' y .. ; ,' .. p jf ,. s , u u ., n N H S. Manifolds all connected and ready for strapping. -t ° Strapping Is a veru important part of solar collector Installations. Most problems that mqv occur years later are due to not properly attaching the sys- tem. Collector straps are made of a strip of collector material five tubes wide by about 2W' long, one stainless Steri washer and for this job 1/4"x2" galvanized lag bolts will be usa (Bolts not included in installation kit.) Run the bolt through the middle tube so that l/4" of the strap extends p"t the washer. f 6. Apply a small amount of roofer's mastic where you plan to make your roof penetration. Directly to the side of the coupler, about 4" out. 7. Wrap your collector strap around the coupler and drive the bolt through into the block 0 If you are not using mounting blocks take extra care not to over tighten the bolts. Most composition roofs are mounted on 1/2 plywood and the penetrations are easy to "spin out". Start the bolt applving a good amount of pressure and the bolt will grab the wood right awq. Tighten just enough to squish the rubber with the washer. !f you do over tighten .your bait you'll feel the bolt suddenly spin -easily In place as it strips out the wood. if leji alone the collector will eventually pull the strap out, leaving,a hole in the roof and an unsecured section of the collector bank Pull our the bolt, seal the hole and in, again to the side. a Close-up of properly fastened manifold strap. Trim. off excess strap, — • Note placement of stainless steel clamps allowing access to the screws beneath the strap f----- Manifolds all secure, collectors ready to be roiled out. 8. Blow or sweep the collet - tor area. This isn't usually necessary on a pitched roof belt a flat roof will collect a lot of debris. if a roof is particularly dirty, you may need to hose it off and wait fart it to dry. The mastic won't adhere well to a wet or dusty surface. ---% Unlike shingled roofs, this one has no file line fo follow, so we snapped a chalk line to help us get our first collector straight. 9. Apply a line of mastic every three feet. Make no more than two lines per IOoz. tube, otherwise you'll not be using enough to properly secure the F _ collectors. 9 IO.After applying mastic for one collector, roll outthe collector, pulling, it tightly as you roll it out.—. --► k k.lmni'diately after rolling out the collector, grab the manifold at each end and pull the collector until you we the tubber at the far end start to straighten out. At this point you can remove that tape as well. 12. do back over the collector and press the rubber into the mastic, straightening it out as you go. This is essential to insure good adhesion to the collector.---► r On a pitched roof, especially on a hot duv, you may have to go back periodically and push the rubber back into place until the mastic starts to set up. /t is also important not to step on the collectors where the mastic is. You'll find it to be extremely slipperv. You probably won't fall off the roof but you may have to change ,Maur short. 13. Continue rolling out the rest of the collector bank in the same nuamer. You shouldn't nerd to snap miy more chalk lines. Just go off of the previous: collector. Make sure your manifolds touch each other and axe straight. • As the dale progresses. especiarlly if it hent) ap, you will notice the collectors looking a listleju nnv. DON'T PANIC! As the fresh rubber heats up it Er.Vands and buckles up a bit between the mastic lines. They will shrink back as soon as ywu run that cold pool water shrough them. DO NOT try stretching the collectors to makw them *flat again. Aey will eventually shrink back to their original cold length. 14. Connect the pipe You mask up in step 4 before rolling out the retnaining collectors. You rt>uy also want to snap another chalk line in order to get the next collector straight. 1S. Once all of your collectors an roiled out, connect and strap them as you did the other end. —'-'► install the vacuum relief valve to the high Conner, opposite end of your return pipe. 4— Fcea to wilecuws ♦. Although no two took alike, when you understand the basics, they are all the same when it comes to the solar tie-in. Red arrows indicate flow with solar on. Blue arrows indicate solar bypass flow. Yellow lines indicate how the plumbing was prior to the solar tie in. I. Turn off pool filter and set filter to backwash. 2, Locate the pipe that runs from the filter into the gas heater. Cut out enough of this pipe to install your solar equipment. If there is no heater, this pine will run directly into the ground, to the pool. In this case there may be a chlorinator device on the pipe. Make your tie-in the device, (You may need to relo%ate the device if it is too close to the filter,' — = Valve position and flow with se!aron 3. Install the cluck valve directly after the filter. 4, Install the solar valve after the cheek valve. (Connecting it tike the diagram will snake it easiest for installing an automatic controller.) S. One port of the solar valve (shown in blue) will go to the solar collectors. 6. The other port will be plumbed to the return tee. 7. The other two pods of the return tet will connect to the solar collector return (shown in red) and the; heater inlet (or pool return). 8. A check valve should be installed on the return line. This is not required for the operation of the system. It serves to isolate the system from getting any water when bypassed. valve position andflow with solar bypassed 37 YCLO- 10 VM important! When wrapping pipes around an eve, alr.+ays strap the pipes at the very top, just under the elbows. 38 AutomPtic Controls: A great addition to your suntrvk system is the Compeol LX -220 automatic control system. It will increase the efficiency of your system by 95 to 20 percent by automatically bypassing the collectors when the sun is not directly shining on them. Water passing thix)ugh the collectors at night, on a cool or rainy day, or even just a dark cloud passing over- head can cool the pool quickly through the collectors. operationtWhcn your solar system is Operating, an indicator light will be on. Attn: Roy Heine Suntrek Headquarters 5 Holland, Building #21:5 Irvine, CA, 92618 Dear Mr. Heine, Per your request, I am writing to inform you of Franklin International's test results for Suntrek Roofing Sealant used in conjunction with the Suntrek rubber tubing on ceramic tile, wood (maple) and composition roofing. For this testing samples were constructed measuring approximately one -inch wide by three -inches in length, where the above listed substrates were adhered using Suntrek Roofing Sealant. The roofing sealant was permitted to cure at room temperature for seven days, after which the rubber tubing was peeled from the various substrates using a calibrated universal testing machine to obtain the force required to peel the tubing from the substrates. The following photograph depicts one of the samples being tested: FC, The following table is a summary of the data collected during our testing: Substrates (Adhc►ents) Average Peel Strength (Pounds Per Linear Inch Suntrek Rubber Tubing / Ceramic Tile 12.156 Suntrek Rubber Tubing / Composition Roofing 10.996 Suntrek Dabber Tubing/ Woad (Maple) 8.045 When viewed in conjunction with the numerous successful applications using Suntrek Roofing Sealant to adhere Suntrek Rubber Tubing to the listed substrates, experience indicates that the above values are sufficient for your application. 1 hope that this information is helpful, and ask that you feel free to contact me at 1-800- 347r4583, or direct at (614) 445-1468 if 1 can be of any further assistance.
