Re: Council Agenda Item 14, March 6, 2018 re: Funding for Fish Passage Improvement
Dear Ms. Guzman,
I am writing to clarify that my letter to the City Council submitted on February 6 contained in the
council agenda packet for March 6, 2018 was intended as an action on behalf of the Friends of
Stevens Creek Trail. We concur with the recommendation of the Sustainability Division, but
request, if the Council approves that recommendation, that your commitment be to the Friends of
Stevens Creek Trail who will be the grant applicant for the project.
The Friends of Stevens Creek Trail are writing under separate cover on this issue.
Sincerely,
Richard McMurtry

Re: Council Agenda Item 14, March 6, 2018 re: Funding for Fish Passage Improvement
Dear Ms. Guzman and Council Members,
I am writing to clarify that prior communications this year from Richard McMurtry
contained in the council agenda packet for March 6, 2018 were all submitted on our
behalf and with our full support. As those communications described, we are trying to
garner enough resources to eliminate a significant upstream barrier, whose removal
would help restore the annual steelhead trout run through Stevens Creek in Cupertino.
The Friends of Stevens Creek Trail will be the applicant for grants for this project and we
ask that any letters of commitment be addressed to us, the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail,
22221 McClellan Road, Cupertino, CA 95014.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best regards,

Honorable Councilmembers:
Thanks again from the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail to Cupertino for helping provide the matching funds two years ago
for our Water District grant to identify and evaluate several fish passage barriers in Stevens Creek. Now we hope to
secure another Water District grant to actually remove one of those barriers, which happens to be located in Cupertino in
Deep Cliff Golf Course, as described in the Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition letter attached to Agenda Item 14.
Sorry I can't make the Council meeting. Please support that addition to the mid-year budget, to support steelhead trout
migration up and down Stevens Creek!

Dear Mayor Paul, and Councilmembers Sinks, Vaidhyanathan, Chang and Scharf,
As a parent of a Monta Vista student and long-time resident of the BBF neighborhood, I fully
support the Carmen Bridge project and urge you to fund the study of this amenity. I believe
the bridge will create a safe and easy way to connect our neighborhoods, make for a safe
passage for students to get to and from school without having to be driven, and encourage
more biking and walking in general. Done well, it might also be serve as another landmark
that will visually define our city.
Thank you for your consideration.

Dear Council and City Staff,
I'm writing today to express my support for the Carmen Bridge project. As a parent of two who hadattended Stevens Creek Elementary, I certainly see the value of this bridge for students (and parents) ofthat school. Immediate value for those in the neighborhood north of Stevens Creek boulevard who wouldbe able to walk/bike across the bridge to school. Those in other neighborhoods would benefit fromreduced traffic at the school.Since I live on the North side of Stevens Creek (on Cupertino road) there is definitely value for those inour neighborhood who attend either Kennedy Middle or Monta Vista High. They will have an easier andsafer access in that direction.Beyond that, this bridge will enable friends to visit on foot or bike without having to negotiate a busythoroughfare.
Having been raised in Cupertino, I have seen many changes over the years and truly appreciate theupgrades and improvements that keep coming. 'Upgrades and improvements' are fitting since we arehome to Apple Computer, whose very existence relies on them.
One such improvement was the city's purchase of Blackberry Farm, which lies just east of the proposedbridge. Building the bridge would provide safer walk/bike access to Blackberry, as well as the adjacentMcClellan ranch park. More importantly, it bridges two neighborhoods whose inhabitants will be able toenjoy easier face to face contact. Not Facebook, not FaceTime, and certainly not Nextdoor, where thelimited nuances and anonymity of written communication can be detrimental to a harmonious community.
As a member of the Cupertino Senior Center, I take advantage of the weekly Senior Softball games as away to stay fit. I will also be running in the Big Bunny fun run this month (for the umpteenth time.) Irecognize the importance in keeping fit regardless of age, and walking is good for all of us.
As we live just up the street from the Sunny View Retirement community, we often see members of thatcommunity walking up and down the street. How great will it be when they will be given more options withthe new Carmen Bridge that doesn't involve either busy streets or hilly terrain?
I guess what I'm saying is that our neighborhood is due for an improvement, and the Carmen Bridge is amost welcome one. Please build it.
Best regards,
Harlan Jackson22273 Cupertino Rd.

Dear Council and City Staff,
I have 9 year old daughter that attends Stevens Creek Elementary. We try walk to school once a week (the school
encourages the students with a wonderful walk and roll program). Walking is about 25 minutes for us, mostly
through quiet neighborhoods, until we get to Stevens Creek boulevard. We are forced to choose between going
around and adding more time, or risking a crossing. I believe the Carmen Bridge project is wonderful idea and fully
support finding a study as well as the other improvements.
Thank you for listening,
Demitrios Master
