Subject:July 3, Item #13 Lifetime Activities Agreement -- requesting unanimous approval
Date:Monday, July 02, 2018 8:54:48 PM
Mayor Paul, Vice-Mayor Sinks and Council Members,
I attended the City Council meeting on June 19, and was frankly appalled by the discussion of
the Agreement Extension and Amendment with Lifetime Tennis, Lifetime Activities, Item # 9
on the Consent Calender. This council supposedly supports small businesses in our
community, yet failed to acknowledge that this business has spent 23 YEARS building a
highly regarded program in our community in cooperation with the Cupertino Parks and
Recreation Department. The staff report details their contributions to the community over the
years. In 2016-2017, there were over 6,000 participants...the most popular program sports
program offered from children to seniors. The Acting Director of Parks and Rec, Christine
Hanel, describes Lifetime Activities as an outstanding partner who established deep ties with
the community.
Why is this council even questioning the value of extending this agreement???? The
proposed guarantee to the city is higher than their current income. Even more importantly,
this structure provides the vendor with pricing flexibility to offer new fee structures and
new programs without being constrained by outdated fee structures that no longer fit the
demand from the community. Lifetime Activities was the only business which met the
qualifications established by an RFQ from Parks and Recreation, so why aren't isn't council
recognizing this???????
This council talks about private / private partnerships, but this behavior sabotages long term
relationships and erodes confidence in council leadership and actions..
I urge council to unanimously approve this item #13 on the consent calender for July 3.
Furthermore, please schedule a commendation for the work of Lifetimes Activities in the
community.
Please put this communication in the public record, and the council packets.
Warm regards,
Jean Bedord
