SC 06-21-2018CITY OF CUPERTINO SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION Environmental Education Center 22221 McClellan Road Thursday June 21, 2018 4:00 p.m. MINUTES PLEDGE OF ·ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Meera Ramanathan, Anna Weber, Gary Latshaw, Vignesh Swaminathan, Angela Chen Commissioners Absent: None Staff: None Action Item: Motion to begin the meeting with Commissioner Ramanathan taking minutes was made by Commissioner Latshaw and seconded by Commissioner Swaminathan. Motion passed 5-0 . APPROVAL OF MINUTES Action Item: Draft minutes of May 17, 2018 meeting reviewed. Motion to approve the minutes was made by Commissioner Ramanathan and 2nd by Commissioner Swaminathan. Motion passed 5-0 . POSTPONEMENTS None. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. OLD BUSINESS 1. Subject: Work Plan and Budget Discussion Commissioner Ramanathan reviewed highlights of the Mayor's Meeting she attended on June 6th: • Bike Commission: McClellan Road will have Class 4 protected bike lanes and Class 1 on Imperial Ave; • Fine Arts Commission: Looking into creating a performing arts center in Cupertino, similar to Mountain View's center. • Public Safety Commission: Reported declining break-ins, no fires . • Planning: Upcoming meeting on Valko on Aug. 15th. • Parks and Rec Commission: Reported on Memorial Park redevelopment and the Master Plan. • Housing Commission: 50% of all new homes to be set aside for low-income; $80,000 to $100,000 to be considered low-income. • Teen Commission-Working on teen stress. Commissioners Chan and Weber to work to ensure that Teen Commission has visibility with FUHSD. Commission Goals The Commissioners established the following goals for the Sustainability Commission to work on: 1) Public education: what residents can do to assist with Climate Action Plan (CAP) implementation Regional and all utility company-wide rebate programs availability PACE, SVCE, Rainwater Sustainability Speaker Series 2) Business partner Assistance via professional services, audits Multi-tenant housing energy usage control -grants from Silicon Valley Clean Energy New developments -work with Planning Commission Harness more jurisdictional power PACE 3) Youth stewardship Student grants Waste program 4) Advocacy Education brought back to City Council and population 5) A) Education for Commission Inaugural countywide Sustainability Commission Meeting 2 CAP status updates monthly -CAP education Master Plan of Santa Clara County Sustainability Commission City Council and City staff meeting preview of sustainability items B) City Council recognition, outreach, creating more of a social media presence Mission Statement: Provide education, advocacy, assistance and stewardship to the Cupertino community for the city. Action Item: Motion to cancel the August 16th meeting was made by Commissioner Chen and seconded by Commissioner Swaminathan. Motion passed 5-0. 2. Subject: Set Date for Work Plan/ Goal Setting Session Action Item: Motion to move the next Commission meeting from July 19th to July 12th was made by Commissioner Latshaw and seconded by Commissioner Swaminathan. Motion passed 5-0. NEW BUSINESS None. STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS Commission Reports: Commissioner Latshaw spoke on an upcoming electric vehicle workshop hosted by Peninsula Clean Energy. He will send details to the Commission. Commissioner Weber spoke about need for education for Commissioners. Commissioner Swaminathan spoke on SPUR meetings as a resource. for learning about city regulations. Commissioner Chen asked for more visibility with City Council and the public. Staff Updates: None.
