Seating capacity is 52. ®' lArl Chance said one of the problems with the chain of restaurants is that there is no image created; each looks different. The original proposal for this location was too "plain Jane" and they are attempting, with this new design, to establish an identity. They want something that will catch the eye without being garrish. The exterior colors will be a shade of red, charcoal or dark brown, and a beige fascade. There will be a 14' overhang of either charcoal or dark brown with alternating deep yellow beams. He said the colors are not finalized; therefore, he requested only the architecture be reviewed at this time. He will"need time to coordinate the exterior colors with the interior colors and he hasn't contacted an interior decorator as yet. Mr. Small commented that this has gone from the conservative to the extreme and he does not think the City Council will go along with these plans, architecturally speaking. Mr. Irwin said he was against the beams, which resemble some of the local car washes. Mr. Chance said that a rendering would give a better perspective. He said the architecture is very similar to Kibbey's Restaurant in Redwood City. Messrs. Irwin and Stern felt the plan was diametrically opposed. The applicant was asked to resubmit, after receiving the general feeling of the Committee on the architecture. He --was. reminded that he already had approval on the original, more conservative plans. Moved by Mr. Irwin, seconded by Dr. Kowitz, to continue application 213 -HC -66 for two weeks to allow Mr. Chance to assemble.his color photos and arti'st's rendering for further evaluation by the Committee. AYES: Comm. Irwin, Kowitz, Small, Stern, Fitch NAYS: None Motion carried, 5-0 B. Application: 244 -HC -66, Chris'Lambrecht, 7515 Kingsbury Court, San Jose, requesting Arch. and Site Approval to construct a single family dwelling to be located on Lot "C", Tract 3407, Shelly.Drive, Cupertino. Mr. Chris Lambrecht, 7515 Kingsbury Court, San Jose, explained that this is a 7300 sq. ft. lot rather than the legal 7500 sq. ft. lot. He has an approved Variance. This lot is 100 ft. wide by 70 ft. deep. In calculating the side yard setbacks for this odd -size lot, it was determined that the side yard would be extremely wide; much wider than any of the others in the neighborhood. It was suggested that perhaps it could be calculated on the more realistic 70 ft. rather than the 100 ft., and this would make it a'total of 14 ft. for both.sides. Chairman Fitch recommended the minimum side yards be held. Mr. Holmberg, 1063 A Saratoga-Sunnyvale'Road, San Jose, said that Mr. Lambrecht plans to build a $35,000 home here and he is trying . to: fit this home in with the others in Paradise West. Here we have a sub -standard size lot, and it is difficult to work with. Every effort is being made to make it fit,in with the community. -2- a was requested the Commit -tee make a request to the City Council that coopera.tian bergiven,, due to the fact that this is a :pecullat sized lotA that 207or of the de-pth rather than the Xrontage be used in eomputing the- side Ya. ds- - Otherwise th•e .side .yards would be compj:etely- out= c5f 11he' with the .others in the neighborhood6 I?re Ko ui z said that},.a,s to g`as.. the-.hous`e i's- no closer than any of `the ocher hone o "t0 {'st e:et he sees,: rio pr°ob cm:fg MDQ lx°vuin °eels this Yieuse w . be 'an:: r p ooze int ,: to the rae' ghborizood s cher than . a de-, --ime t die ' vuas ° nc1' ned _ to ga alcing with a9bend .ng: the rules, Moved. by Mr© Smalls seconded by Mr. Irwin,, that application I C4&6 be recomi end d °ea site approval wl:th 7 wide etbac s==v filch` then wo d `be eor-npati l.e vu,, th. the s n num. lot widths in the areae which 3a .effect9 int erprets as to 20% o ","the minimum lotsIvidth8 as provided in the Ordinance y''y p / 7 q 7,., u y.,,jeg ,N {, y,.p v /•..© .y. D. Application: 247 -HC -660 Ad Art, Inc., P.O. Box 648, San Jose, requesting Arch. and Site Approval to erect one free-standing sign (5' x 10t6") and one single - face building sign (1'8' x 13'0 ), to be located at "The Don's Restaurant% 20950 Stevens Creek Blvd. Mrr Jim McLey, of Ad Art, displayed the artist's rendering of the pole sign, and a print of a proposed roof sign. It was explained that this site is allowed 53 sq. ft. of signing. If the applicant wishes to propose both signs, he will have to go to the Planning Commission to ask for a Variance. The Committee felt the pole sign was appropriate, but took a dim view of the -proposed roof sign. They felt it was in bad tast and was superfluous. Mr. McLey explained the pole sign will be visible to east - west traffic. It will extend 3' over the sidwalk and the bottom of it will be 1116" above the sidewalk. The sign will be of white plastic with. brown trim; will be internally lighted; and the poles will be of tubular steel. The pole sign will have a planter at its base. Moved by Dr. Kowitz, seconded by Mr. Irwin, to recommend for approval application 247 -KC -66 for the one free-standing sign of 53 sq. ft., as submitted; sign to be 20' high instead of 21'6" high; building sign to be eliminated; landscaping plans as submitted under application 236 -HC -56; subject to the 10 standard conditions. AYES: Comm. Irwin, Kowitz, Small, Stern, Fitch NAYS: None Motion carried, 5-0 E. Application: 243 -HC -66, Mr. Ray White, 841 The Dalles, Sunnyvale, Shell Oil representative, requesting Arch. and Site Approval to erect one pole sign (6' x 61), 2 price signs (14 sq. ft. each), one Sentinal Car Service sign (15 sq. ft.), 2 trading stamp signs (4 sq. ft, each), and building identification signs 22 sq. ft. total, to be installed at 11111 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino. Mr. White said his company is asking for a total of four signs:- the principal sign would be their standard, non- rotating 6' x 6' sign, erected on a pole 20' high. The pole will be encased in redwood. There would also be one sign for each flow of traffic. In addition, -they would like the customary price signs. Mr. White stated specifically that there would be no A - frame signs. This factor becomes a part of the lease with the operator. Mr. White added that his company does not like snipe signs. They will use a ladder-type:sign instead. Lastly, they must ask for two 2' trading stamps signs, at a total of 78 sq. ft. Mr. White said they will do the very best they can to main- tain a clean operation here. Chairman Fitch asked the applicant if he would consider com- bining the trading stamp sign with the pole sign. Mr. White said this was outside his jurisdiction, but he doubted that .either the Trading stamp company or Shell would be receptive to this idea. Chairman Fitch stated that he was disappointed that a more imaginative approach wasn't employed to sign this outstanding development in Vallco Park. Moved by Mr. Irwin, seconded,by Mr. Small., to recommend for approval application 243 -HC -66; signs to include one free- standing polesign of 61 x 61; two price signs 14 sqo ft. each; one Sentinal Car Service sign of 15 sqo ft.; two trading stanp signs 4 sqo fto each; and building identification signs of a total of 22 sq. ft. There are to be no A"frame signs. This approval is to be subject to the 10 standard conditions* landscaping to .be approved at a later date; the Vallco Park sign square footage is not to be assessed against the total square footage of the service station signs. Moved by Dr. Kowitz; seconded by Mr. Irwin, to recommend for approval the two types of Vallco Park entrance signs as spelled out on the plot plan as submitted; subject to the 10 standard conditions.
