They shoo ".d be as followq o 1, We should not be constrained 'by a.- Speedee Mart character. 2. This is a local store and not a regional representation of Speedee Mart. 3® Consider the contingency of the site broken down to individual units -within this 'building, ,Architecture is not only incompatible but absolutely.objectionablee 4. The architecture invites a traffic problem. 50. The only: high quality building material is the ceramic the "for the roof. - 6, The lighting and illuminated sign, although within Ordinance level, are highly objectionable to this specific area, 7. Is this the best landscaping?000for aesthetics, appeal, safety future nearby buildings. -1-- Moved by Comm. Stern, seconded by Comm. Fitch, to approve the Minutes of Api-il 26, 1967, as corrected. Motion carr'-ed, 5-0 V APPLICATIONS A. Application: 237-HC-66-67, W. A. Sutton, 1618 Kennewick, Sunnyvale, resubmitting for Arch. & Site Approval to extend existing batting range at 22202 Homestead Road, from one cage to three cages. Dr. Elmer C. Sutton, of Birmingham, Michigan, stated he was representing his sone, who was in Los Angeles. He presented copies of the proposal, to be located on the tennis courts, pointing oat the size of the batting ranges, etc. Comm. Fitch asked, through the Chair, who has been re- sponsible for maintaining the site. Dr. Sutton said he has spent the winter here, and he and his son have been maintaining the experimental batting range. They have learned many things; for instance, he is now using nylon netting and he has changed the structure of the poles. Dr. Sutton added that this is a very difficult place to keep tidy. Much trash is thrown here by people who have nothing to do with the batting range. He feels his son's venture here is purely altruistic; this is not a money- making operation. Boys from all over the area come here to use the facilities. Chairman Irwin stated that when this application was originally approved it was to be a short-term experiment; today it is unsightly, and the request is to expand the operation. Dr. Sutton said his sone is just leasing the tennis court; nothing beyond that. He has no control over the balance of the property. Comm. Stern felt the County might have something to say about the weeds. His general impression of the area was one of unsightliness. Comm. Fitch asked if it would be in keeping to ask the owner of the property to take care of the weeds. He was told the City has a Weed Abatement Ordinance and that the City has been notifying the people with vacant lots that now is the time to till the land. Mr. Aronson, owner of the property, said there has been so much rain this year that it has been almost impossible to get in there to get the weeds turned under. -2- k Chairman Irwin asked the -applicant where the parking would be, since the additional two cages would.use the area formerly used for parking. -Dr, Sutton, said the 1. parking would probably be to the east of the tennis courts, Chairman Irwin instructed the applicant to see what provisions can be made for trash collection, since the. applicant scat-ed he has been picking it up and putting itlin the trash cans at his residence® A definite parking plan should be developed, also® The weed be problem will handled by the City, . Comma,Kowitz said.arrangeme, nts should be made for a smooth.operation here. During the off season it just looks run: down. A plan for adequate parking should.be I' presented. The area should be dressed up a bit. Comm, Fitch.sad that apparently this is something new to the area and is good for the area. However, the older people in the community have a resp.onsibiTity to maintain the area so it isn't -unsightly and run: down. In addition, he would like to see proper parking layout for safety reasons-, to keep the cars off the street and see that the children's safety is assured.. . Approval of this application should be contingent on these items. Moved by Comma . Stern., seconded by Comma- FLtc:h,; to post.- pone application 237-HC_66-67 for .two weeks to give the applicant more time to bring in more details on a parking plan and to plan for trash collection, AYES: Comm. Fitch,.Kowitz; Small, -Stern, Irwin NAYS. None Motion carried, 5-0 B. Application: 272-HC-67.,.Simla.Lands, Ltd., 22186. Homestead Road, Cupertino,. requesting Arch. & Site Approval to construct an industrial building for lumber and building materials to be located adjacent to the existing industrial building at 22130 Homestead Road. Mro Aronson; 21450 Columbus Avenue, Cupertino, had -his site plan placed on the bulletin board. He said they now have another tenant who needs a much taller building. It is not.feasible to. build a concrete block building 18 feet high, so this will be.of concrete -tilt -up construction, Comm. -Fitch asked where the paved area would be, Mr. Aronson said.what is not now paved, he will pave at this time. He said than Simla Supply, with its 5 or 6 sub, standard buildings, is going out of business and will be replaced by,this new building, I -3- Chairman Irwin noted the plans called for 9 x 18 parking stalls, whereas the Ordinance calls for 10 x 20. Mr. Aronson said this can be corrected with no problem, because there is more than enough parking area. Mr. Aronson said the color of the building will be the same beige as is on the other buildings. There will be exposed aggregate walls at the southern corner of the building. There will be yard lights on the building, which will be adequate for the police to patrol the area. No pole lights are planned for the parking lot at this time. The adjoining property is commercial. Mr. Victor Riches, 10410 Loyola Drive, Los Altos, said that Simla Supply plans to go out of business in the near future. He plans a more sophisticated business here, but of the same type. There will be indoor and outside storage of materials. This will be a more tightly knit operation than the present one. P.G. & E. will allow storage of non-combustible items on the easement, so he will have bins of aggregate, etc., there. There will be a service road along the ridge, and a cyclone fence is planned under the P.G. & E. lines. Comm. Fitch said he would like to see some type of opaque fence to shroud the outside storage of materials. The applicant was willing to put in a redwood fence. Chairman Irwin asked for comments from the audience. The question of landscaping was introduced. Mr. Aronson explained they are trying some raised planters because they have learned through experience that any shrubs put in cut-outs in the blacktop just get trampled. Five or six walnut trees will be left at the southeast corner of the building. Mr. Aronson agreed to a postponement of this application • so it can be considered with his other building, which will be on the agenda for the next meeting. He was instructed to give thought to the integration of the area, size of the parking spaces, trees and landscaping. Moved by Comm. Fitch, seconded by Comm. Kowitz, that application 272-HC-67 be ecntinued to the next regular meeting, at which time this application will be considered in conjunction with his cther building, which previously came in under application 223-HC-66. Sarah Dorcich, 10580 Whitney, Cupertino, said there is an existing poleandthe barber shop is puttinga sign on it. She would like to put one up to balance the :sign and to advertise her business. She is aware that the entire pole sign will probably have to be, removed within two yea.rs9 but is willing to sign the waiver because she hopes to have her business built-up by that time.
