It uses donated land that the city would not have to purchase. DO NOT APPROVE this item which will remove funding for the trail. Here are a few points to rebut the opposition claims: 1) The trail is existing. It's already built by the city years ago so now the city does not need to invest money in it. A bit of maintenance perhaps but that's it. 2) It's a public trail and should be open to the public as it's already built with taxpayer's money . It shouldn't be closed for the benefit of a few . 3) Apartments and houses are all around the bay area close to the trails such as Mora Trail at Rancho , near Fremont open space Preserve and such; they're kept well and safe . Cupertino is a safe neighborhood so residents close the trail don't have to react in a hysterical fashion . 4) Today's residents in the city are educated and well mannered . We've not seen any dumping or trash near the small portion that is open at the Creekside Park where public usage is high . There are trash cans available and people do use them . 5) We can debate/ decide on the building bridges IF necessary at all . I personally don't think building new bridges is necessary . Just open the gate of the existing trail. 6) Someone mentioned people walking in groups might not have enough space: even though people walk in a group they don't hog the entire width assuming they are civilized people . We see people managing in groups everywhere there are trails and pathways . I am sure it won't be an issue . 7) Safety: If people hysterically approach the sheriffs department , they will be told to put up the surveillance systems . Again, Cupertino is a safe place and there are multiple trails available to the public all over the bay area near houses. It's not a problem in Los Altos Hills, won't be here either. It's just going to be nearby neighbors and kids using the trails . 8) There are over 1200 people who signed the petition FOR the trail over a few who are against it. It's a democracy and public opinion counts. 9) There is no water at the creek and people should walk elsewhere . It's unfortunate that the creek has no water at the moment. We pray for the rain . However, there is no water at the Memorial Park pond either, should we close that too?! The park is surrounded by houses and the park has high traffic yet safe . 10) Someone mentioned that to clean the trail, they might have to lift the bridges . I'm not sure what that even means . There is a bridge connecting to the Creekside park over the creek and in the last 10 years, I've never seen the miracle of the city lifting the bridge to clean the creek. 11) If the city does approve of bridges, I would assume you would hire competent contractors who would know how to access the area . Citizens need not worry about "how?". I would like to see the trails open to the public. I'm not sure we need bridges but certainly can open the gates of existing trails so that everyone can enjoy the walk .
