FAC 08-22-00 City of Cupertino FINE ARTS COMMISSION Regular Meeting August 22, 2000 CALL TO ORDER At 7:39 p.m., the meeting was called to order in Conference Room A, Cupertino City Hall, 10300 Torre Avenue. ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Charlene Pai, Commissioners Stephen Beard, Hema Kundargi, Janet Mohr, Carl Orr, Rita Young (7:40 p.m.) Absent: Mary Sievert City staff present: City Clerk Kimberly Smith, Recording Secretary Dorothy Steenfott Guests: Jan Rindfleisch and Diana Argabrite APPROVAL OF MINUTES Beard moved to approved the minutes of the regular meeting of June 27, 2000, the special meeting of July 13, 2000 and the regular meeting of July 25, 2000. Orr seconded and motion passed unanimously with Sievert absent. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS City Clerk reported on a letter from the new development director of Silicon Valley Shakespeare Festival which thanked the City for the $20,000 donation. NEW BUSINESS A. Determine annual funding amount for Euphrat Museum of Art Jan Rindfleisch, Euphrat Museum, updated the commission on the museum's activities and requested continued support from the commission. She stated that operating income and expenses were approximately $150,000. Diana Argabrite, Euphrat Museum, also gave an update on the children's program. She stated that over 20,000 student hours of instruction were achieved during 1999/00 and that 1,000 students attend tours each year. Beard moved to provide Euphrat Museum with a $6,000 grant. Young seconded and motion passed unanimously with Sievert absent. August 22, 2000 Fine Arts Commission Page 2 e Discussion followed regarding ways in which the Euphrat Museum could assist with the Fine Arts Commission, in particular, the children's mural project. It was suggested that art work created by students through the Euphrat's Art in Schools program could be exhibited at the Cherry Blossom Festival, rather than trying to squeeze another project into the schools' busy curriculum. Diana Argabrite asked that the Fine Arts Commission contact her with next year's theme for the festival. B. Signage at new public restrooms in Memorial Park. City Clerk reviewed an article regarding public art in restrooms to curb graffiti. She suggested that signage on the outside of Memorial Park restrooms could be considered. She also stated that the Senior Center has requested assistance regarding the selection of art for the new center and also for the "art wall". Consider feasibility of dropping the number of commissioners from seven to five when two individuals are termed out at the end of the year. City Clerk reported that the commission is the only one that has seven members. She stated that two members will be leaving the commission in January and requested input from the commission as to whether to reduce the number of commissioners to five at that time. The commission discussed the feasibility of making the reduction and decided to continue with seven members. Young moved to keep the number of commissioners at seven. Orr seconded and the motion passed unanimously with Sievert absent. OLD BUSINESS A. Finalize report to City Council for September. 18 presentation. City Clerk requested input from the commission regarding the content for the report. The commission decided to include the following items in their presentation. Student Art Exhibition - Cherry Blossom Festival Distinguished Artist of the Year · Four Seasons Plaza Artist · Award of Fine Arts Grants, including $6,000 to the Euphrat Museum of Art · Art in Public Places August 22, 2000 Fine Arts Cornrnission Page 3 m ge B. Commission goals - report from ad hoc committees Orr stated that he had attended the Art and Wine Festival and suggested that the commission consider having a booth with information about the commission and public art at next year's festival. He also suggested putting art on City vehicles as a means to promote art in public places. C. Four Seasons Update Continued to next regular meeting of September 26, 2000. Do Status report on Distinguished Artist of the Year presentation and Shakespeare play City Clerk reported that the presentation went well and that we are still waiting for information regarding the attendance numbers for the play. E. Brainstorming regarding Cherry Blossom Festival 2001 The commission decided to discuss a theme for the 2001 festival at the next regular meeting of September 26, 2000. COMMISSIONER AND LIAISON REPORTS mo Selection of representative for Mayor's breakfast on September 12 at 7:15 a.m. Pai volunteered to attend the breakfast.
