1.' A'.'s3ituation which has developed'at-the Park Avenue Apart -
was discussed: It seems that a: tenant there has,
for a long period of time, been doing a major overhaul
on his car in his carport-. Debris and car parts and
grease are all over the carport area. The Chief Building
Inspector, together with representatives of the fire and
police' departrd(ehts,: cited the offerider .(a teenager) and,
• notified the apartment manager and owner that this sort
of -thing is.iri.violation-of the Architectural and Site
Control Ordinance and the Zoning Ordinance.
The manager and/or the owner -'were told to appear before.
this Committee tonight, but did not come. It was the
recommendation of the Chief Building Inspector that
Chairman Horgan write letters to them to either take steps
to'alleviate thi& situation.in a very short time or to
come before the next H-Control meeting and explain their
reasons for not doing so.
It was felt that this .condition would.definitely have an
effect on the vacancy factor in that group of apartments.
Mr. Fitch felt that teenagers usually learn a lot from
working on cars and that it keeps them occupied and out
of trouble, usually, but that this should not be allowed
if it is a prolonged project and one which is a detri-
ment to other persons living there.
Moved by_.Mr. "Nuzum, seconded by Mr. Fitch, to have Chair-
man Horgan investigate this matter.; take it up with the
City Manager, and report back at the next meeting.

B. Application: 190-HC-05 Mr. Edward Adams, Wonderlite Neon
Products..' Inc., 4301 third Street, San Francisco, requesting
Architectural & Site Control Approval of a 6' x 5' pole sign
for Laurentide building ion Stevens Creek Bivd
Mr. Adams.said the free-standing pole sign'would,replace the
existing,.larger one'. Zaurentide will also have a flush, wall
sign which will.be against the building. The.,pol'e sign is a
non-illuminated,"ion-r.'o,ating sign. The applicant submitted
pictures of the existing sign and_'of the contemplated re
placement.
Chairman Horgan said. that, realizing this' would be a decided
improvement over the existing sign,_he was basically against
pole signs along.Stevens Creek.Blvd.
Mr. Adams said that Laurentide took this location —in Cupertino,
which-is'not on a corrie,r, chiefly on his assurance that they
would be able to have ',this pole sign. He based his assumption
on..the precedent.set by"the business across.tho street, for-
merly Mandella's,-that was granted a.sign variance for the
smorgasbord -type restaurant.
Mr. Fitch said, that he really was not expecting Laurentide
to usea pole sign.
Moved by Mr. Small, seconded by Mr. Nuzum, that application

VI NEW
BUSINESS
A.
Mr. Nuzum requested the Chief Building Inspector to investigate
the possibility of reversing the even -numbered pages of the
Minutes so the file copies could be more easily read. The
present system is quite unwieldy.
B.
Chairman Horgan brought up the matter of service stations that
put up extra signs announcing the price of gas, issuance of
trading stamps, etc. Nothing was resolved about this at this
meeting.
®
C.
The Chief Building Inspector asked the Committeemen to be
thinking of persons they would like to have speak on evenings
when the agenda is "light." It was decided they would first
like to hear Mr. Walter Ward, of Vallco Park. Mr. Jim
Jackson, of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, would be another
good choice. It was suggested he could speak about the survey
they are planning to make of Cupertino residents.
