Rampy, Small Staff present: COMMUNICATIONS A. Written,---- None B. Verbal ----- None Chief Building Inspector, Bill Benevich Recording Secretary, Lois Inwards MINUTES OF THE H-CONTROL COMMITTEE MEETING, AUGUST 10, 1965 Moved by Mr. Nuzum, seconded by Mr. Fitch, that the Minutes of August 10, 1965, be approved as read. Relative to one of the applications at the last meeting, the Chief Building Inspector said his office has received a letter from the Fire Marshall stating that the wood roof would not be allowed on the church under application number 193-HC-65. At -the last Council meeting it was brought out that a church in Saratoga was allowed to use wood shingles, and possibly this would set a precedent. The Fire Marshall pointed out in his letter that Saratoga is in Fire Zone 3 whereas Cupertino is in Fire Zones 2 and 3 and, therefore, wood shingles cannot be used. Motion carried, 3-0 IV APPLICATIONS A. Application: 194-HC-65, Palma Coppola, 1299 Covina Court, Saratoga, to erect two signs and change of name on exist- ing roof; sign to be located at southeast corner of Stevens Creek Blvd. and Highway 9, known as the Pee Wee Pizza Parlor. Mr. Palma Coppola, 12099 Covina Court, Saratoga, said he has been associated with this corporation, but now he is going to own this business, at this address, himself. Right now, this establishment is just about breaking even and he feels that by more advertising and new signs he will gain more patrons. -1- Sunnyvale Road. The painted sign will be illuminated by two lights shining down from the roof and this will also help light up the parking lot. IThe metal and plastic sign for the front of the building will',have interior lighting Mr. Nuzum said he would like to see more detailed drawings of the contemplated..signs. Mr. Fitch and Chairman Horgan agreed. Mr. Coppola assured the Committee that this is not a noisy or flashy type of businessl: He intends to run. the business in a similar manner. L Chairman Horgan was not inlj'favor of the sign to be painted on the side of the building, although it looks like the sign for the front of the building 11is in good taste. He feels the corner of Saratoga-Sunnyvat.e Road and Stevens Creek Blvd. is a choice location and.a si',n painted on the'side of the build- ing announcing 7-PIZZA,AND BEER" does not help the image that Cupertino is.trying to.crete. i Mr. Fitch feels that a smaller sign, in good taste, would help... rather than hinder the business. Mr. Coppola said signs. are expensive"and he only has a 2-year lease here. After checking with the other Committeemen,.,'Chairman Horgan told the applicant that zf',' ho could have more detailed. plans prepared.before Friday, th'e Committee is willing to call a special meeting to review ',them and this would still come before the next City Counc'i1 meeting. He said the detailed plans should include: type of,lettering, coloring, type of materials, and the layout.i' Mr. Ca,ppola1 explained ' that,II. Monday is his day off, and Friday is one of .his busiest day&, in', t'he week. -. Moved by Mr. Fitch, seconded by Mr. Nuzum, that application 194-HC-65 ba.tabled until Friday, August 27th, at 8:00 P.M., a special meeting. Motion carried, 3-0 B. Application: 195-HC-65, Griffin & Murray, Architects, 307 Phelan Avenue, SanI,I,.Jose, requesting Architectural and Site Control.Approval to construct a 3,986 sq. ft. office building for Van'Vleck',iRe.alty to be located at the north- west corner. of Kirwin Lane and South Highway 9. i Mr. Champlain, 307 Phelan Avenue, San Jose, presented the plot plan for the contemplated building. He said the property is zoned C-1-H. The exteriorwlll be redwood siding with slump stone veneer trim. The parking ratio will be more than covered," Landscaping plans are not firmed up as yet, so they would like to submit them at a later 'date. -2- Mr. Champlain was given a copy of the 10 Standard Conditions. He was agreeable to all items listed. It was brought out that the street improvements on both Kirwin Lane and Sarato-a-Sunnyvale Road will be put in at the time of development of the property. Mr. Champlain said the applicant has the land now and wants to go right ahead with the building, as soon as they get the go ahead. There must be- a 6' masonry wall constructed on the property line that abuts residential property. At the 20' set back line in the front, this masonry wall height is to be reduced to 3', It was brought to the attention of the applicant that, with proper fire walls, the building can go right.up to the property line, if this is zoned C-1-H, but there can be no openings on those walls. The applicant elected to have this layout acted upon at this meeting, and then he will confer with the City Planner and possibly come back in with another layout. Moved by Mr. Fitch, seconded by Mr. Nuz.um, that application 195-HC-65 be recommended for approval, subject to: 1. 10 Standard Conditions. 2. The revised rendering. 3. Landscaping plans to be submitted before final inspection. 4. -Any revision to the plot plan to be resubmitted to the Architectural and Site Control Committee. AYES: Messrs. Stelling Road, Cupertino, requesting_ Architec- tural and Site Control Approval to construct a Meeting Hall and an Education Wing to be located at the rear of the existing Sanctuary Building at 10100 No. Stelling .Road, Cupertino. Architect Conrad H. Stieber, 1010 Minnesota, San Jose, and Contractor Clyde Martin, 20876 Sarahills Drive, Saratoga,'. presented the plans for the one-story meeting hall and the two-story education wing. The parking area will be com- pletely developed, all the way across the property. Street improvements along Stelling Road will be put in at the time of construction. The applicants said that any landscaping done during this phase of their development plan would have to be temporary but that they plan to landscape at the time the Sanctuary is built. In the past, there have been complaints from adjacent resi- dential area about the.lights in the parking lot, so some thought should be given to a -buffering, say, a row of trees along the north property line. Mr. Martin agreed with this thinking. Mr. Stieber said there would be no appurtenances on the roof. -3- E E 1. 10 Standard Condition". 2.
