II APPLICATION
A. Application: 194-14C-65, Palma Coppola,-12099 Covina
Court, Saratoga, requesting Architectural & Site
Control Approval .to..,erect: two signs and change of
name on existing roof; sign to be located at south-
east corner_;of;.Stevens..Creek Blvd. ;arid Saratoga -
::Sunnyvale Road; known'as the Pee Wee Pizza Parlor.
(Continued from August 27; 1965)-
Chair -man Horgan recapped the previous Hearings on this appli-
cation for the benefit of those who were not present at
those meeting's..'He said there are three issues here;
1) Change the sign on -the roof;- 2) New sign on the front
of the building; 3) New, painted sign on the side of the
building facing Stevens Creek Blvd. Mr. Coppola has sub-
.mitted a photograph showing where the two new signs would
go and what the roof sign looks like now.
Mr.. Fitch asked whether these signs are all within the Sign
Ordinance restrictions., Answer was in the affirmative. He
then asked if there are any restrictions against painted
signs in Cupertino. He was told there were not.
Mr. Coppola described the colors -,of the 3 signs. The build-
ing is painted beige He offered to -change the colors of the
signs to make them more compatible. He said he and his wife
are buying this business outright from the corporation and,
at!present, the business is just about breaking even. He'
..said it would .cost $50 to have the roof sign removed, and
even though it is not of much advertising value now, it would
be of no value sitting in the basement.
Chairman Horgan advised that the Committee's decision cannot
be based upon Mr. Coppola's financial position. If and when
the Committee make a decision on these signs, it is to be
based on the aesthetics and compatibility with the area.
Mr. Fitch feels that one sign is not too bad; two signs are
all right; but three signs for one business are too many at
one location. He said he would go for the sign on the side
of the building but not for three signs on one spot.. He
feels that would be over -exposure.

driving to see the sign. He feels the roof ::sign is not do -rig
the job, so why not talIe it down,
Mr. Rampy commented thdt he does not like great, big signs.
He also said the paintEN,d sign on the side of the building
would appear more as a advertising sign rather than a loca-
tion sign.
Mr. Small said that if',,Ithe roof sign was coming in tonight as
a new .sign; how. many :off, the Committeemen would vote far it,
Thee. Committee a-greed tY1at they, would not. vote for it.:
MI..Coppola said :there•'is only ..a two-year lease on..this loca-
tion.. .He' does. not - feel. he can justify -the expenditure of
$50 to'have the roof .sign removed.;
:C1hairman Ho* rga-n, asked the applicant: T,,,ho .would maintain -the
painted sign. Mr. Coppola..said,he would repaint the sign, if
and when. the need ari-ses.
Small agreed' that C@,upertino.! s.. Szgn,,Qrdinance is a toughy--
but' -it is that wayfor I,a reason,...; If ;this..entire application
were approved, ' i wouhol' be the; only: business: in Cupertino.

:..could -set a precedent..
