II) BACKGROUND A) Current sign program at this site''I lucies the following elements: 1. Two office building ground,signs I`ea�,uring 50 square feet each. 2. One California State Au tornobil'e,Assoclatlon (CSAA) ground sign measuring approximately 10 square feet (see�Exhibit F-1 of Application ASAC 51,729.1). is B) Applicant proposed to replace current CSAA sign with an enlarged ground sign measuring 6' x 6' (see Exhibit F of Application ASAC 51,771.1). C. The Sign Ordinance typically limits office buildings to one sign. In the past, staff has utilized the more liberal commercial standards in evaluating this site given its lengthy frontage. The Ordinance 'limits commercial properties to two ground signs, ASAC approved the third sign,finding that it has a low profile design which is unobtrusive when viewed from the street. III) MAJOR ISSUES PUBLIC: -None STAFF: The proposed sign is larger 'dnd h' as° a more'; monolithic appearance than the existing sign. Staff does not believe that a: nding of unobtrusiveness can be made for this sign. APPLICANT: Proposed sign justified to reduce public confusion in finding the building, given the multiplicity of names by which the street is called.(See Minutes of 01 /25/88, Pg.. 2) 0 SUMMARY REPORT -- ASAC 51,771.1 fe Page-2- RECOMMENDATION: 02/16/88 ASAC recommends denial of the proposed sign program modification, citing inconsistencies with the intent of the Sign Ordinance for Office uses, and inconsistency with visual context. NOTE: The applicant's appeal letter contains a modified ground sign proposal; the Council may wish to withhold action on the Exception and remand the application to ASAC for consideration of the alternative design.
