FAC 06-08-2020 (Special) MINUTES FINE ARTS COMMISSION Monday, June 8, 2020 FINE ARTS COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING CALL TO ORDER At 6:30p.m., Chair Mahalingam called the meeting to order via virtual teleconference. ROLL CALL Commissioners: Rajeswari Mahalingam, Janki Chokshi, Sonia Dhami, Diana Matley Absent: Sudha Kasamsetty APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Meeting of December 4, 2019. Commissioner Matley motioned to approve the draft minutes. Commissioner Chokshi seconded. Motion passed with 4 votes yes and Commissioner Kasametty absent. CEREMONIAL MATTERS AND PRESENTATIONS 2. Presentation from Valley Water Service about their Art on Benches program Received presentation 3. Presentation from Teri Gerhardt, GIS Manager, regarding Cupertino’s Augmented Reality Art Walk, ARTour Received presentation ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS None OLD BUSINESS 4. Determine the winner of the Art in Unexpected Places contest Received submittal from Sarabijt Singh Received submittal from Geeta Taneja Commissioner Mahalingam motioned to determine Sarabijt Singh the winner of the Art in Unexpected Places contest, choosing her “Sample 1” with some additional feedback provided from commission. (Add more poppy flowers, nesting owls on eucalyptus trees, more local birds, reference contest description of local flora and fauna). Draft with edits will be presented at the July 27, 2020 meeting. Commissioner Matley seconded. Motion passed with 4 votes yes and Commissioner Kasametty absent. 5. Emerging and Distinguished Artist Awards- Determine the next steps for the Artist Award programs Usual outreach for Emerging Artist and Distinguished Artist is March-July. Deadline would be July 17. Discussion on whether the Emerging Artist and Distinguished Artist should overlap with the Young Artist cycle or wait until March 2021. After discussion, the desire was to continue Emerging Artist and Distinguished Artists and overlap with the Young Artists. The cycle for the Emerging Artist, Distinguished Artist, and Young Artists awards will be July 27-November 13, 2020. Consensus was to use city resources and online to advertise (website, newsletter). Proposed discussion of outreach for the awards programs at the July 27 meeting. NEW BUSINESS 6. Introduce the new Fine Arts Commission Staff Liaison, Kelsey Hayes Welcome Kelsey Hayes as new Fine Arts Commission staff liaison and made Commission introductions. STAFF AND COMMISSION REPORTS Staff Report Erick Serrano provided the commission a report on a potential mural project on the sound wall of Hwy 280 and Wolfe Road exit. There is a lot of graffiti, and what happens is that the City has to contact Santa Clara Valley Water District to paint over the graffiti. The idea from the building official is to set up another Art in Unexpected Places on the sound wall. The art could be commissioned or a contest depending on the direction from the commission.
