First of all, I wanted to thank you all for your support of Measure A and your support of our CUSD schools. Having your voice in our community means a lot, and as a school board member, I really appreciate your willingness to stand up for public education. While I know 67% is a high threshold for any election, I feel confident that support is high in our community and I'm personally thankful for each of you and your decision to endorse. I wanted to send this letter in support of the Carmen Bridge project. I had a chance to meet with the Walk- Bike-Cupertino leaders this week and they helped provide some information on the specifics for the project. Admittedly, I'm not a resident in that neighborhood, but I am a strong believer in the greater good for the community to have more accessible pathways for pedestrians and bikers. I've been impressed with how Cupertino has made biking/walking safety a priority these last few years. Our whole community was grief-stricken when Ethan Wong died from the bike accident a few years back, but it touched my family (and Vice Mayor Chao's) in a personal way, since we've both known the Wong family for years and our sons have grown up with Ethan's younger brother Gavin. When I drive through Cupertino now, and see the bike bumpers and widened bike lanes, I'm grateful for the leadership that took action after that tragedy, to take steps to ensure that something like that won't happen again. Thank you for creating a legacy for Ethan that will impact future generations. I'm excited to see a project like Carmen Bridge, that will help provide a safe access route for many students living south of Stevens Creek Boulevard to safely get to Stevens Creek Elementary each day, without having to be driven because the route is too difficult or unsafe for them. It will also allow many students to bike from the neighborhoods north of Stevens Creek Boulevard to Monta Vista High and to Kennedy Middle School. As I'm sure you're aware, it's already been endorsed by the PTAs and PTOs of the surrounding elementary, middle and high schools in that neighborhood, so the community is in support of it as well. It's another step toward ensuring safety for the children in the community, which we all care about. As you look at your list of projects for 2021-2022, I hope you will consider adding funding to the next Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) budget for the Carmen Bridge, all the way through construction. As I understand, it's already Tier 1 in Pedestrian Plan and Tier 2 in Bike Plan, so it's in alignment with city priorities. Allocating full funding for the project would allow for long-term planning and budgeting. Thank you for the work you are doing, and your leadership for the city. Sincerely, Sylvia Leong Cupertino Union School Board Trustee (representing myself only, as a member of the community)    4 Cyrah Caburian From:Bill Wilson <bwilsonca@earthlink.net> Sent:Saturday, May 1, 2021 4:37 PM To:City Council Subject:Carmen Road Bridge CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the  sender and know the content is safe.    Dear Mayor Paul and Cupertino City Council Members:  I am writing to ask that you allocate and commit necessary funding for the Carmen Road Bridge project.  This project will  benefit community members young and old alike.  It is an investment that provides a lot of return as it connects parts of  the community that are separated by the very busy Stevens Creek Boulevard.  This makes the project a very significant  step forward in the ongoing transformation of our city to a place where citizens can navigate by foot or bicycle.    As president of the FUHSD Board of Trustees, I am particularly interested in the benefit this bridge will provide for our  student who wish to walk or bike to school.  This project will provide an easier and safer path to Monta Vista High School  for hundreds of students.  In recent years we have seen a significant number of students biking to several of our schools.  If this project is completed, it will afford the opportunity for many more students do this.  Among the many advantages  of having students bike to school are increased student health and stress reduction from exercise, decreased traffic  around our schools, and less impact on the environment.  With students returning to school, it would be nice to have  safe routes available for more students as soon as practical.  I hope that the city council will make the commit to fund  this project now so that it can be scheduled, completed and used by our students and community members in the near  future.   Thank you for considering this and thank you for serving Cupertino.  Sincerely,  Bill Wilson     5 Cyrah Caburian From:jmoe@auxillium.com Sent:Wednesday, April 28, 2021 8:44 PM To:Darcy Paul; Liang Chao; Kitty Moore; Hung Wei; Jon Robert Willey Subject:Carmen Road Bridge Project Attachments:Letter in Support of Carmen Project.docx CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the  sender and know the content is safe.    Dear Mayor Paul and Council Members,    As a community member and leader, I ask that you allocate the necessary funding for the Carmen Road Bridge  project.  This project will provide our community members, including seniors and students, a safe way to navigate  neighborhoods and safe routes to schools by foot or bicycle.    The Carmen Road bridge will help to reconnect neighborhoods, reduce traffic around our schools and pursue a path to  make our community greener. As our roads return to being busier, it will be challenging to bike on Stevens Creek Blvd  and Foothill Blvd, which will force neighbors and students into their cars to make trips that could otherwise be made via  walking or biking across the Carmen Road bridge.     I understand that the city staff is quite busy with a long list of capital projects.  They are to be commended for their  successful efforts thus far.  I encourage you to give the Carmen Bridge project a funding commitment in the city’s future  capital improvement plans.    There is wide community support for this project.  If the design and development start late in the next fiscal year, then  construction and installation can start within the next 15 months.    Thank you all for your support.    Sincerely,    Jeff Moe  FUHSD Trustee    April 28, 2021 Dear Mayor Paul and Council Members, As a community member and leader, I ask that you allocate the necessary funding for the Carmen Road Bridge project. I believe the Carmen Road Bridge project will provide safe passage for students, seniors, and other community members and keep more cars off of our streets. Thank you for your consideration and for all you do to ensure the safety of Cupertino residents and visitors.
