09-009 De Anza College ICCE~- ICCE Memorandum of Understanding between ICCE and City of Cupertino The De Anza College Institute of Community and Civic Engagement advances education for democracy with full participation of all of our communities as its core value. Our goals are: • Empower students to be agents of change in the social, economic, political realities of their lives, their communities and beyond. • Define education as a transformative and dee~~ly relevant force in students' lives. • Emphasize the teaching and practice of demo~~racy for advocacy and change through community-based learning and collaboration. The Institute of Community and Civic Engagement formalizes its community partnership between City of Cupertino, Block Leader Program and Leaders in Training Program. These two programs connect neighbors and build community through leadership and advocacy training, which is a priority area for the ICCE. Partnership Goal The organizations have identified the goal to provide services learning opportunities for De Anza College faculty and students in collaboration with the City Of Cupertino Block Leader program and Leaders in Training program. The collaboration will be beneficial to the Cupertino community including De Anza College. Partnership Benefits Benefits to Cupertino • The community-campus partnership increases community capacity and strengthens the connection of diverse cultures within the community. • The relationship with an academic institution brings prestige and may lead to grater ability to leverage resources. • The development of projects enhances the ide~ltification of future employees, volunteers and donors. • The community-campus partnership provider; opportunities to develop leadership skills for Block and Youth Leaders. Benefits to Students, Faculty and De Anza • Students and faculty serve as bridge to cultur~il connections within Cupertino. • Students engage in service learning opportunities in the local community. • Students practice civic engagement and participation in politics and government. 2 De Anza Faculty and administration learns haw to engage in a partnership with Cupertino administration and its community. Community Campus partnership provides positive publicity and community credibility. The partnership provides the opportunity to advance the mission and goals of ICCE. Partnership Activities The partnership activities include, Community Service Learning for Block Leaders Program • Identify and work with faculty teaching De A~zza community service learning • Orientation for all project participants • Enter Block Leaders Program data onto Community Links database Leadership development for Block Leaders • Leadership courses tailored to community organizing • Train in project management Leadership development for Leaders in Training Program • Summer leadership development experience (action-reflection model) • Select leadership course/training materials (i..'. Community Action Network strategy) • Trainers selection • Training schedule • Work with organizations to provide college credit units for school's programming for high school students and students of college age The community-campus partnership will also provide additional volunteer opportunities in local community programs to De Anza College students. Partnership Responsibilities City of Cupertino commits to: • serving as a liaison to Cupertino City departments and programs to implement ICCE community service learning program. The director of Park and Recreation committed ten (10) hours per week for planning and program implementation. • working with ICCE staff to maintain database information for community service learning projects • attending collaboration meetings • involving Block Leaders and Leaders in Training in the collaboration • participating in evaluation activities • designating representatives from City staff an~.i Block Leaders program to the Partnership Advisory Committee • contributing and shares resources The De Anza College Institute of Community and Civic Engagement commits to: • recruiting faculty for the community campus partnership • convening meetings with faculty and administration
