I visited the site on June 11, 2010, and this report presents my observations, photographs and conclusions. The subject oak (see photos below) is an estimated 35 feet tall, and has an asymmetrical canopy that spreads approximately 60 feet across (30 feet is to the north, 30 feet is to the south, 40 feet is to the west, and 20 feet is to the east). High-voltage electrical lines are located along the canopy's northern perimeter (along the edge), and due to required and on-going clearance, will limit future growth of the canopy in that direction. ;_ _ _. . , - , , = j I ii , , . . ; `F -<, ' 4 r r" , , ^k ' ' `.' r' .;.` "' '' - Y M . The ground beneath the canopy is largely unpaved, and consists primarily of gravel and rock. The oak appears vigorous and in excellent health as leaf , e , a color, shoot growth and canopy density seem optimal. Its "--. `a;:, , 3 , i . C ,' ' , structure, however, presents concern to the extent that, in my -:""' `':` ,;. - M . ' + opinion, removing the tree would conform to Section ° t.., f- , 14.18.180 of the City Municipal Code. The structure is ` ;` , : comprised of three trunks originating at grade and having '` i:. ' , t : t. `' ' F. relatively equal and sizeable trunk diameters of about 20 ' - ` r ,; 4. ,t ' . inches. These trunks (see photo to right) grow with very narrow angles of attachment, particularly the center and right one in the photo, and this growth pattern predisposes one or more trunks to potentially split from the tree. The following are measures can be employed to potentially reduce the risk of trunk failure, although they do not eliminate the risk nor do they necessarily reduce the risk to less-than- significant levels over the tree's remaining lifespan: pruning to reduce heavy limb weight, and the installation and frequent (e.g. every year or two) monitoring of support cables. For optimum effectiveness, these measure would need to be performed according to professional industry standards set forth by ANSI, by a California state-licensed tree service company (D-49 classification), and under the direction and supervision of an ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certified arborist. p.o. box 25295. san mateo californa 94402 ■ email: arborresources(acomcast.net phone: 650.654.335 I ■ fax: 650.240.0777 ■ licensed contractor #796763 ARBOR RESOLIRCES . professional consulting a and tree care _ _ _ .-o -- .:x' . i►l . .._iJt ` June 15 2010 g -o 10540 Wunderlich Drive .. -. °m page 3 of 3 . .-" .. _ _..__ , .s:..v ;v ,;r3r If the tree is removed, Section 14.18.185 ("Tree Replacement") of Cupertino's Municipal Code provisions the installation of one tree of 36-inch box size to be installed on-site. I recommend it consist of a coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), valley oak (Quercus lobata) or deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara), and be established at least 20 feet from the future foundation. The new tree should be installed, including necessary irrigation, by an experienced state- licensed landscape contractor or a professional tree company. The method of installation should conform to the standards established by the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture). I also suggest the tree is double-staked, and irrigation be in the form of an automatic drip or soaker hose system placed on the soil surface and not in a sleeve. Sincerely, G- David L.
