Re: Support of Staff recommendation for a solid waste and organics rate
increase.
Dear Mayor and Council Members,
The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce supports that staff
recommendation of a rate increase of 5.28% for commercial and multi-
family solid waste and organic rates. With the new California State
mandate of Assembly Bill 1826 and the City of Cupertino municipal
code updates, commercial and multi-family solid waste generators will
have the largest impact on the diversion of food waste and organic
material. The City of Cupertino is a leader in environmental
stewardship, and through their partnership with Recology, they have
rolled out successful diversion programs to the commercial and multi-
family customer base.
As a result of these successful programs, the environmental benefits
include the reduction of greenhouse gases, conservation of landfill
space and the return of compost to the City of Cupertino community
for its residents to use.
